How Often Should You Get a Facial? The Answer by Skin Type, Age and Goal

Medical facial at Skin Lab Clinic, med spa in Midtown East NYC

"Once a month" is the answer most people have heard, and for a lot of skin it is roughly right. But it is a default, not a diagnosis. Oily skin in July, dry skin in a heated Manhattan apartment in January, and skin that is six weeks out from a wedding all need something different. So how often should you get a facial, really?

This guide gives the short answer first, then the reasoning, then a schedule by skin type and by goal. It is written from the treatment room at Skin Lab Clinic in Midtown East, where a good part of every consultation is telling people they are booking too often, or not often enough. Whether you are searching for the best facial in NYC or just trying to decide if last month's booking is due again, the answer starts with your skin, not a calendar.

The short answerMost skin does best with a professional facial every 4 to 6 weeks. That window matches how long your skin takes to renew itself. Oily or congested skin sits at the shorter end, dry and sensitive skin at the longer end, and anyone working toward a specific date or a specific result follows a different plan, which is covered below.

Why every 4 to 6 weeks, and not more often

Your skin replaces itself on a schedule. New cells form at the base of the epidermis, travel upward, flatten, and are shed from the surface. In your twenties that cycle takes about 28 days. By your forties it stretches closer to 45, and it keeps slowing from there. This is the number behind the 4 to 6 week rule.

Skin cell turnover cycle, why facials are spaced every 4 to 6 weeks
New cells rise from the base of the epidermis to the surface in roughly 28 to 45 days. A facial is timed to meet each new cycle.

A professional facial does two things a home routine cannot. It clears the dead cells and congestion that a full cycle leaves behind, and it puts actives into skin at a concentration that is only sensible under supervision. Do that once per cycle and each fresh layer of skin arrives on a clean surface. Do it every week and you are exfoliating skin that has not finished rebuilding, which is how people end up with a barrier that stings when water touches it.

The exception: a corrective course. If you are treating congestion, texture or pigment, we may book sessions two to three weeks apart for a short run, then move you to maintenance. That is planned intensity, not a standing habit.

How often to get a facial by skin type

Skin type moves you within the 4 to 6 week window, and occasionally outside it. Here is how we set the interval at consultation.

Oily, dry and mature skin types, each needs a different facial schedule
Oily, dry and mature skin. Same question, three different answers.

Oily or acne-prone skin: every 3 to 4 weeks

Oil production does not wait for your calendar. Pores refill, congestion builds, and the shorter interval keeps ahead of it. This is also the skin type where a proper large pores treatment in clinic, with extractions done correctly, beats months of pore strips. Once breakouts are controlled, most oily skin settles into a comfortable monthly rhythm.

Dry or dehydrated skin: every 4 to 6 weeks

Dry skin needs hydration pushed in, not layers stripped off. A Signature Medical Facial built around infusion and a barrier-supporting finish is the fit, and it holds well for a full cycle. In a New York winter, with radiators running, we shorten this to four weeks for many clients.

Sensitive or rosacea-prone skin: every 6 to 8 weeks

Less is more, and gentler is better. Sensitive skin responds to calming, hydrating protocols and reacts badly to being over-handled. A longer interval with a well-chosen facial does more than a monthly session that leaves you pink for three days.

Combination skin: every 4 weeks

The T-zone wants oily-skin timing and the cheeks want dry-skin care. Monthly is the compromise that works, with the treatment itself adjusted zone by zone rather than the schedule.

Mature skin (40s and beyond): every 4 weeks

Cell turnover slows with age, which sounds like a reason to wait longer. In practice it is the opposite. Slower turnover means dullness builds faster and collagen support matters more, so a regular monthly facial, ideally one with collagen stimulation or LED, gives the best return. This is where the Advanced Medical Facial earns its extra fifteen minutes.

How often by goal: glass skin, events, weddings

Skin type sets your baseline. What you are trying to achieve changes the plan.

Glass skin is a finish: even, hydrated, reflective. It is built over a course, then maintained.

Maintenance and general glow

Every 4 to 6 weeks, as above. If you want a reliable facial for glowing skin and nothing more complicated, a standing monthly booking is the whole plan.

Glass skin

The glass skin finish is the result of a barrier that holds moisture and a surface with nothing dull sitting on it, so light bounces off evenly. It is not achieved in one visit. Our Glass Skin Medical Facial is designed as a course: five sessions, spaced 3 to 4 weeks apart, then one session every 6 to 8 weeks to hold it. Clients see a difference after the first, but the reflective quality people mean when they say glass skin facial arrives around session three.

Before a wedding

Brides ask us for the best facial before the wedding as if it were one appointment. It is a series. The right final facial is the third or fourth one in a series, not a single heroic session the week before. Start 4 to 6 months out with monthly facials. Book the final one 7 to 10 days before the date, never closer, so any extraction marks or mild pinkness are long gone. Many brides finish with the Platinum Medical Facial as the last session because it includes microneedling, which needs that week of lead time.

Before an event, shoot or big meeting

One session, 3 to 5 days before. Choose a facial with no downtime (our Signature and Glass Skin facials both send you back to your day) and skip anything resurfacing that close to the date.

Correcting a concern

Congestion, dull skin treatment, early pigment and uneven texture are all course work: three to six sessions at 2 to 4 week intervals, then maintenance. For anything deeper than the surface, a facial is a partner rather than the whole answer, which is where laser or RF microneedling comes in.

Two things the chart cannot show. First, most New Yorkers are more than one row: combination skin with a wedding in May, or mature skin that is also sensitive. Second, the interval is a starting point that we adjust after seeing how your skin behaves between the first two visits. A clinic that gives everyone the same schedule is not looking at your skin.

What to do between facials

Applying serum as part of an at-home routine between medical facials
The four weeks between facials are where most of the result is made, or lost.

A facial is one hour out of roughly seven hundred. What happens in the other six hundred and ninety-nine decides how long the result lasts. Keep it simple:

  • Days 1 to 2 after: no actives, no exfoliation, no makeup if you can manage it, and no gym heat the same day. Cleanse gently, moisturize, SPF.
  • SPF every morning, including office days. Unprotected sun undoes brightening work faster than anything else, and it is the single biggest reason results fade early.
  • Exfoliate no more than twice a week at home. If your skin is being professionally exfoliated monthly, daily acids on top are too much.
  • One retinoid, one vitamin C, one moisturizer. A short routine done nightly beats a ten-step routine done on Sundays. Our dermatologist-approved morning routine covers the order.
  • Do not pick. Extractions are the reason you booked a professional. Doing them at home between visits is how one clogged pore becomes a mark that lasts a season.

Signs you are overdoing it, or waiting too long

Too often

  • Skin stings when you apply products that never used to bother you
  • Persistent tightness or shine that is not oil, which is a stripped barrier
  • Redness that lasts more than a day after treatment
  • Breakouts appearing after facials rather than clearing up between them

Not often enough

  • Makeup sits unevenly and looks dull by early afternoon
  • Blackheads and congestion build faster than your home routine can manage
  • Texture you can feel with a fingertip, especially across the forehead and chin
  • The glow from your last facial faded within a week, which usually means the interval was too long, or the home care in between was not there
A note on "medical" facials. Every facial at Skin Lab starts with a skin analysis and is performed by hand, by licensed clinical staff, inside a private medical suite. That is what lets us change the interval and the protocol from visit to visit, instead of running the same device routine on everyone.

Facial frequency, answered

Is it bad to get a facial every week?

For most skin, yes. Weekly professional exfoliation does not give the barrier time to rebuild, and the usual outcome is sensitivity, not glow. The exception is a short corrective course planned by your clinician, with sessions two to three weeks apart, then maintenance.

How often should I get a facial in my 20s, 30s and 40s?

In your twenties, every 4 to 6 weeks is usually plenty, and some clear-skinned twenty-somethings do fine at eight. In your thirties, monthly keeps early dullness and pigment ahead of you. From your forties, monthly with collagen support (LED, microneedling in the Platinum) gives the best return because turnover has slowed.

What is the best facial for glowing skin?

For a same-day glow with no downtime, the Signature Medical Facial. For a lasting reflective finish, the Glass Skin Medical Facial done as a course of five. If you have an event in the next week, book the Signature; if you have three months, start the Glass Skin course.

How long do the results of a facial last?

The visible glow lasts about a week. The structural benefit, clear pores, better hydration, smoother texture, lasts through one skin cycle, roughly four to six weeks. That is exactly why the booking interval is what it is.

How often should you get a facial before a wedding?

Monthly, starting four to six months before the date, with the last session seven to ten days out. Never try a new treatment for the first time in the final month.

How much does a medical facial cost in NYC?

A medical facial in NYC runs anywhere from $150 to over $1,000 depending on what is included. At Skin Lab Clinic in Midtown East, the Signature Medical Facial is $299 for 60 minutes, the Advanced is $499 for 75 minutes, and the Platinum, which includes microneedling, is $899 for 90 minutes. The Glass Skin Medical Facial is currently $299 (normally $499), or $1,196 for a course of five. All prices are listed in full on our services page, with nothing added at checkout.
