Preparing for Your First Med Spa Visit: What to Expect
Skin Lab Clinic · February 20, 2026 · 6 min read
Walking into a med spa for the first time can feel a little intimidating. It does not have to be. Here is exactly what happens on a first visit to Skin Lab Clinic in Midtown East, what to do before, and what nobody should be selling you on the way out.

What a med spa actually is, and what it is not
A med spa sits between a day spa and a doctor's office. The atmosphere is calm, but the work is clinical: skin analysis under proper light, professional-grade products, technique that is trained rather than improvised. The part that matters for a first visit is simpler than the industry makes it sound. A good med spa looks at your skin before it sells you anything. A bad one starts at the price list.
At Skin Lab Clinic that order is fixed. Nothing is decided before the analysis, and the treatment you booked can change once we have actually seen your face, sometimes to a cheaper one.
Before your appointment
- Pause strong actives for two nights. Retinoids, acids and prescription exfoliants make skin more reactive. Let it settle so we can see what it does on an ordinary day.
- Skip waxing or threading on the face for 48 hours. Freshly waxed skin does not respond well to exfoliation.
- Come with or without makeup. Either is fine. We double cleanse before any analysis, so there is no need to arrive bare-faced.
- Bring the name of anything you use. If you are on prescription skincare, medication, or you are pregnant, tell us. Some phases get adjusted.
- Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early. First-visit paperwork and the skin analysis should never eat into treatment time.
What happens during your visit
The skin analysis
Your aesthetician examines your skin under examination light and asks what you actually want from it. Congestion, dehydration, sensitivity, sun damage, early loss of firmness. What we see decides the protocol. This is also where we tell you if the facial you booked is not the right one, which happens often enough that it is part of how we work rather than a story we tell.

The treatment
All four of our facials follow the same shape: cleanse, prepare, treat, finish. What changes inside those phases is decided by your skin. The Signature Medical Facial builds the middle phase around La Prairie's Skin Caviar line; the Organic Custom Facial uses clean, plant-based formulations chosen on the day. Nothing is introduced as an upgrade once you are on the bed.
The plan
You leave with simple written aftercare and an honest answer on when, or whether, to come back. If your skin does not need a return visit soon, we say exactly that.
After your treatment
All four facials are no-downtime treatments. A mild flush can last up to an hour, then settles into a natural glow. Most clients go straight back to their day, and many book before dinners and events for that reason. Skip saunas and heavy workouts for 24 hours, wear SPF the next morning, and hold off on new actives for two nights.
Questions worth asking on any first visit
- What did you see in the analysis, and how did it change what you are doing today?
- Is there a gentler or cheaper option that would do the same job for my skin?
- What do I actually need to buy afterwards? The right answer is usually nothing.
- How often should I come back, and what happens if I come less?
A clinic that welcomes those questions is one you can trust. A clinic that gets uncomfortable is telling you something too.
Which facial to book first
If you are unsure, book the Signature Medical Facial. It begins with the full analysis, and if your skin would honestly do better with the gentler Organic Custom Facial, we switch you there and you pay the lower price. Skin with a specific problem to correct, pigment, stubborn texture, recurring congestion, is usually better served by the Advanced Medical Facial. Our services page lays all four out side by side with prices.
Questions
First visit, answered
Do I need a consultation before booking a facial?
No. Every facial at Skin Lab Clinic begins with its own skin analysis, so the consultation is built in. Book the treatment directly and the analysis happens at the start of it.
Can I come straight from work?
Yes. Makeup is fine, we cleanse first. Evening slots up to 8PM fill first, so book those a few days ahead.
Will someone try to sell me products?
Only if you ask. You leave with written aftercare and an honest recommendation. There is no obligation to buy anything to take home.
Is a med spa safe for sensitive skin?
At Skin Lab, yes, because the analysis catches sensitivity in the first ten minutes and the protocol adapts. The Organic Custom Facial exists specifically for reactive skin.
