A Dermatologist-Approved Morning Skincare Routine

Skin Lab Clinic · January 21, 2026 · 6 min read

Your morning routine sets the tone for your skin all day. Most people are doing too much of it. Here is the version that actually protects skin, in the order that works, with the steps you can skip.

The one rule that matters

Morning skincare has one job: protect. Repair and correction belong to the evening, when skin is not fighting sun, pollution and office air. Once you accept that, the morning routine gets shorter, cheaper and more effective. Four steps, five minutes, done.

The four steps, in order

1. Cleanse, gently

You have not been outside. A lukewarm rinse or a mild cream cleanser is enough; a foaming cleanser twice a day strips the barrier you are about to try and protect. If your skin feels tight after washing, the cleanser is too strong.

2. Antioxidant serum

A vitamin C serum, applied to dry skin, neutralises the free radicals that pollution and UV create through the day. This is the one active that genuinely belongs in the morning. Give it a minute to absorb.

3. Moisturiser

Lighter than your night cream. Its job is to seal the serum in and keep the barrier calm under sunscreen. Oily skin still needs this step; skip it and the skin overproduces oil to compensate.

4. Sunscreen, every day

Broad spectrum, SPF 30 minimum, a proper amount, which is more than most people use. This is the single most effective anti-ageing product that exists, and it is the step most often skipped on cloudy days. UV does not care about cloud.

What you can skip in the morning

  • Exfoliating acids. They make skin photosensitive. Evening only.
  • Retinoids. Same reason, and they degrade in light.
  • Toner. Optional at best. If your cleanser is gentle, there is nothing to rebalance.
  • Eye cream. Your moisturiser can go around the eye. A separate product is a preference, not a requirement.

Adjusting for your skin type

Oily: gel moisturiser, mattifying sunscreen, do not skip either. Dry: add a hydrating essence before the serum, choose a cream sunscreen. Sensitive: drop the vitamin C if it stings, use a mineral sunscreen, and keep everything fragrance-free. Reactive skin usually needs fewer products, not more.

A note for New York skin

Midtown air is dry indoors, polluted outdoors, and the subway adds its own layer. Hydration in the morning matters more here than it would somewhere gentler, and the antioxidant step earns its place. If your skin still feels tight by noon with a full routine, that is dehydration the routine cannot fix alone, and it is the most common thing we see in the Signature Medical Facial analysis.

When home care isn't enough

A good routine maintains skin. It does not correct pigment, clear stubborn congestion or rebuild deep hydration. That is where professional work comes in: a monthly facial resets what the routine maintains between visits. Sensitive skin does well with the Organic Custom Facial; skin with something to correct is better served by the Advanced Medical Facial. Every facial at Skin Lab Clinic ends with a written routine built around your skin, not around a product shelf.

Questions

Morning routine, answered

Do I need to cleanse in the morning?

Lightly, yes. A lukewarm rinse or mild cream cleanser. Avoid foaming cleansers twice a day, they strip the barrier.

Vitamin C or moisturiser first?

Serum first, on dry skin, then moisturiser, then sunscreen. Thinnest to thickest.

Do I need sunscreen indoors?

If you sit near a window, yes. UVA passes through glass and is the main driver of pigment and ageing.

How much sunscreen is enough?

About a quarter teaspoon for the face. Most people use a third of that, which is why it fails.

The routine maintains. A facial resets.
